In this presentation Dr. Nadeau will draw upon Family Social Science to examine the role of meanings in child and adolescent grief. Emphasis will be placed on the influence of family meaning-making patterns and how meaning-making occurs in the social space of the classroom, the cafeteria and the corridors.

Dr. Nadeau combines the theoretical with the practical using illustrations from her research and long standing grief therapy practice. The format will be lecture with Q&A as time allows. The learning objectives for this training are as followed:

  • To recognize signs of child and adolescent grieving, both obvious and disguised, in the school setting.
  • To appreciate the role of meaning construction in child and adolescent grief.
  • To describe how family meaning-making can influence students.
  • To identify at least three ways that teachers and school counselors can promote healthy meaning-making by their students.

Leslie Wood presents this 2.5 hour training, designed to educate and prepare school professionals who work with grieving children.The training will prepare the attendee to:
1.) Understand a child’s perception of death as it relates to the developmental stages of a child;
2.) Recognize indicators of complicated or traumatic grief;
3.) Understand the physiological, emotional, behavioral and spiritual manifestations of grief and their impact on a child’s academic performance;
4.) Communicate with children and their caregivers about death and dying;
5.) Institute age and classroom appropriate interventions for children who are grieving and their classmates.
